Cultural competence in communication – Teal and Street

Northern Health BC along with the National Collaborating Centre for Aboriginal Health has some great resources:

  • Quick 5 minute video on cultural safety.  All the same messages that we teach in ICC, using the term that is common in BC.
  • Cultural safety: respect and dignity in relationships, a quick primer written for health providers

About the term cultural competence.  There’s all sorts of scales out there from bad to good, with different terms at each stage.  Rose likes the scales which reference a lack of awareness at one end, with something akin to humility at the other.  But beyond that, is it just wordsmithing (arguing about the words, not the action)?  And why don’t we use these in ICC?  Participants don’t want to hear that they are ignorant, in denial, or destructive….adult learning is about bringing people to a point of readiness to learn more to do better.  But here’s some examples:

Going Deep

A Profile of the Interculturally Effective Person – the old Department of Foreign Affairs policy, and an attempt to build HR systems to evaluate it.

Cultural Security – Australian Govt– as a compare/contrast, what did Australia attempt at one time?  It’s a great approach, but didn’t quite implement.

In Organizations

FNIHB Aboriginal Employment Plan – on paper, it’s very good.

New Zealand Retention of Maori in ministry – avoid the risk of tokenism in HR plans

BC First Nations Health Authority’s Policy Statement on Cultural Safety and Humility

In Facilitation

Exploration of cultural safety educators Maori– An older but good piece on the risks of facilitating in this space.
